Foodscaping is a relatively new concept in horticulture which interplants edibles with ornamentals, or utilizes ornamentals that are also edible. One plant that exemplifies this is sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). This plant is in the grass family, ranging in color from green to red, resembling bamboo from afar. I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying “Knee High by the Fourth of July” in reference to growing corn. Well, it’s just not true in this part of the country. In fact, it doesn’t hold much truth in America’s Corn Belt either. If we planted corn with the goal of knee-high by July, it may never make it to July with the number of insects and diseases that would attack it. So where did this phrase come from?
